Few Reasons Why Your Lawn May Fail to Prosper
Most of you must be having a lawn at home. However, you may find that your lawn is not prospering as much as you expected it to be. Why your lawn fails to grow when every other lawn around appears to be very attractive and green?
Just check whether you have used your top soil spreader properly? Following are few other issues that may be not promote proper growth of your lawn over the years. Just give a hard look at these points.
- Poor soil
Often many of you will be taking this alibi that your soil is the main culprit but you can create your soil that can favor growing conditions of grass. Try to test the soil for its nutrient content, pH value etc.
With proper soil testing you can find what is necessary for the soil. In fact, you must test your soli after every 3 – 5 years and track its improvement and change as per the need.
- Compaction
For lawn grass, compacted soil is horrible growing medium, as soil may become compacted due to foot traffic, poor soil composition and vehicle traffic etc.
Excessive compaction will reduce airspace needed for healthy functioning of soil and optimum growth of plant causing thin and stressed turf that can be susceptible to disease, weeds and pests.
With proper aerating and top-dressing compaction is relieved.
- Poor drainage
Often people overlook the drainage in the lawn which is often main cause of lawn problems. Soils having much clay content can often be reason of poorly drained lawn.
After you irrigate or rain, soil becomes waterlogged and it remains in soil. Subsurface drainage with perforated piping must be installed to draw away the water from the area.
Also, pitch of lawn can be altered for improving surface drainage.
- Too much shade
If your lawn does not get enough exposure to sun then it is one of the major factors for poor growth of lawn. If tree shades are falling over the lawn then the tree branches must be regularly pruned.
- Mowed too short
Lastly, if you mow your lawn too short then it can damage the crown of the plant, which can be the plant’s growth center. As grass will work for recovering from damaged crowns, it becomes stressed.
Stressed lawn can give rise to diseases, weeds and other invasion of pests. By growing full, lush, lawn with 3.5 inches height can reduce plant stress and can crowd out weeds and all the seedlings naturally.
